SERVICES FOR FAMILIES THAT ARE EXPERIENCING A CHANGE OR TRANSITION IN THEIR CHILD CUSTODY AND/OR TIME-SHARING ARRANGEMENTS

Whether a parent is moving from supervised to unsupervised visitation, primary child custody situations have changed, a parent and child have not had contact for some time, or a major change has occurred in the life of a family, VMS can help the parents and children make a smooth transition by making recommendations as to the best interest of the child(ren). As part of this service, VMS may:

Facilitate and Document Time Sharing

VMS may use several techniques to promote and facilitate time-sharing between a parent and child, some of which may include allowing the child(ren) input on activities and times to share with the parent, creating a time-sharing calendar with the family, and being present during the first visits together with their parent to provide the child with a sense of security. Documentation of attempts to facilitate, efforts of one parent to encourage the children to engage in time-sharing with the other parent may be available upon request.

Provide Feedback

At VMS, we recognize that not all families are the same, and that sometimes different solutions must be offered for the family to succeeed in establishing or recreating a bond between parents and children. During our observations of time-sharing with your family, we may offer suggestions based on our experience that may assist in strengthening that bond.

Create a 30, 60 or 90 Day Plan

Once VMS has met with both parents, the children, and observed some time-sharing, a plan may be created to establish goals for future time-sharing which may include a calendar of visits, phone calls, and possible referrals to a family therapist should that be needed.

Families utilizing VMS Reunification/Transitional Services typically observes the following process:

  1. Parents meet separately with VMS to complete an intake/orientation.
  2. VMS meets with the child(ren) prior to the first appointment/visitation with the visiting/estranged parent to get their input on the situation and discuss any factors that make them fearful or uncomfortable about contact with the other parent and create a plan for easing their discomfort.
  3. VMS is present during the first contact between visiting/estranged parent and child(ren).
  4. VMS facilitates a 30-60-90 plan with the family for further time-sharing/visitation.
